Deciding in January what is paid in April

The problem it solves

Almost all of a small company's tax attention lands on the moment of filing, which is precisely the moment when nothing is left to decide. The year closed, the transactions happened, and all that remains is reporting them correctly.

Meanwhile, across the twelve months before, the business made decisions with tax consequences without seeing them that way: how a large purchase was structured, when revenue was recognised, how the owner was paid, whether someone came on as an employee or on some other basis. None of those conversations felt like tax conversations at the time.

The result is not that too much or too little gets paid. It is that it gets paid without anyone having decided, which is the definition of not having planned.

What it covers

The workshop separates two things routine conflates: filing, which is an act of reporting, and planning, which is a set of operational decisions taken in time.

The work is done on the participant's own calendar. It identifies the points in the year where decisions with tax consequences get made, and marks the last date on which each is still a decision. That map is the deliverable: it does not say what to do, it says when you need to be thinking and with whom.

The session holds one boundary firmly. It does not determine what applies to you, does not recommend a structure, and does not replace your accountant or your legal counsel. What it delivers is the ability to reach those conversations early and with the right questions, instead of arriving in March to report something already done.

What participants learn

  • Separate filing, which reports, from planning, which decides.
  • Identify the moments in your own year that carry tax consequences.
  • Fix the last date on which each decision is still a decision.
  • Recognise business conversations that are tax conversations in disguise.
  • Prepare the accountant and legal consultations in advance.

Agenda

  1. Filing and planning: two acts, two calendars
  2. Business decisions that carry tax consequences without looking like it
  3. The last useful date of each decision
  4. What a planned year looks like next to a reported one
  5. Who needs to be in the conversation, and when
  6. Documentation to generate as it happens, not afterwards
  7. Signals that a decision should have been consulted earlier
  8. How to put a question to an accountant so it can be answered

What the organisation leaves with

  • Your own calendar of decisions carrying tax consequences.
  • The last useful date marked against each one.
  • A list of conversations to hold before the year moves further.
  • A consultation format to bring your accountant with enough context.

Frequently asked questions

Will you recommend a structure or a tax strategy?
No. Determining what suits your case is your accountant's work and, where legal structure is involved, your legal counsel's. This workshop identifies when to ask them, which is what usually goes missing.
Is it useful if my business is very small?
Yes, and often more so, because in a small business the structure and owner-pay decisions are made without review and then left in place for years.
Should I bring financial statements?
Not necessary. The work is on the decision calendar, not the figures. If you bring them, they are used to locate moments in the year, never to analyse your situation.
