The clocks your business runs at once

A business in Puerto Rico does not answer to one authority. It answers to several, and none of them hands you the whole picture.

The problem it solves

Most owners who arrive overwhelmed by "taxes" do not have a tax problem. They have a calendar problem, and not one calendar.

A business operating in Puerto Rico answers to several authorities at once. Each keeps its own clock, its own form and its own idea of when the year begins. None of them knows what the others asked for, and none has any obligation — or any ability — to tell you what your full year looks like.

So the owner learns about obligations by notice, which is the most expensive way to learn anything. And because each notice arrives separately, each is handled separately, and the pattern is never seen.

What it covers

The workshop does not teach filing and does not tell you what applies to you: that is determined by whoever prepares your filings, with your case in front of them. What it does comes earlier, and nobody does it — it builds the consolidated view that exists nowhere.

The core of the session is a mapping exercise. Each participant sets out, for their own business, which authorities govern it, on what cycle, who inside the company answers for each, and where the data behind each filing is generated. Two discoveries are almost universal: an obligation that applied and nobody had placed, and several with no owner by name.

The closing part turns the map into operations: recording as things happen rather than reconstructing at the end, and preparing the conversation with the accountant in advance rather than improvising it in March. The difference between a two-hour close and a two-week one is never in the close.

What participants learn

  • Map the full set of compliance calendars governing your own business.
  • Assign every obligation an owner by name inside the company.
  • Identify which piece of data each filing depends on and where it originates.
  • Separate what the company settles from what the preparer determines.
  • Replace end-of-period reconstruction with recording as things happen.

Agenda

  1. Why nobody hands you the consolidated view
  2. The authorities that govern a business and their differing rhythms
  3. What changes the day you hire your first employee
  4. Obligations that depend on where you operate
  5. The data each filing needs, and where it is actually generated
  6. An owner by name versus "the accountant handles it"
  7. Recording as it happens versus reconstructing at the end
  8. How to prepare the conversation with whoever prepares your filings

What the organisation leaves with

  • A one-page map of every compliance calendar in your own business.
  • A named owner assigned to each obligation.
  • A list of the data to be captured and who generates it.
  • A question agenda to bring to whoever prepares your filings.

Frequently asked questions

Will you tell me which obligations apply to my business?
No, and be wary of anyone who does so in a classroom. What applies depends on your specific case and is determined by whoever prepares your filings. Here you build the map and the questions; the determination belongs to your accountant.
Does ALUD prepare filings or perform audits?
No. ALUD claims no CPA, audit or legal authority, and this workshop is about organisation and anticipation rather than regulated services. We work on the system you bring to your accountant, not on your accountant's work.
Is it useful if I already have an accountant and I am current?
That is usually the case with most to gain. Being current is not the same as having the full view: your accountant files what you hand over, when you hand it over, and the map is precisely what nobody is handing them.
